XMP
This page is about the metadata format XMP. XMP is short for "Extensible Metadata Platform". XMP is an ISO standard. XMP is a general standard that allows to describe any kind of digital document, but on this wiki page I am dealing with the format exclusively in terms of digital images.
XMP data can be either directly embedded into an image file, or stored separately in a so-called "sidecar" file which is usually located alongside the image file. The sidecar file format usually is XML and the file extension usually is .xmp.
XMP defines standardized fields but is also extensible so that anyone can add custom metadata.
