General Trading

How can I buy a commodity if I already have some of it in my inventory? In one case I already had 1t of explosives in my cargo, I had space for another tonne, but I couldn't buy, I could only sell.
 ???
If there are several starports and/or outposts in a system, do their commodities markets all have the same items for sale?
No, the markets vary with the economy of the starport, but probably also even if the starports have the same economy.

Smuggling

Do I just get fined when I am caught smuggling, or do I immediately get a bounty on my head?
How can I smuggle cargo without getting caught?
  • It is not the station that scans you, but the security vessels that fly close to it.
  • If the destination is an outpost station, smuggling is quite safe because the station usually does not have any security vessels nearby, so you usually won't be scanned when you approach the station. This is not not a guarantee, though! I got got scanned once or twice even on an outpost. One of these times was on an imperial military outpost.
  • If the destination is a regular starport, though, you run a higher risk because usually starports have security vessels which will scan you pretty regularly.
  • Also, scans happen more often if the system has high security. The system's security ranking can be checked in the system map.
  • Usually you will get scanned by security when you approach the airlock of a starport, so if you are quick in entering the station you may evade the scan.
  • Or you approach the station from the side and then try to sneak into the airlock as fast as possible from that side. It is debatable, though, whether this really works better than just rushing to the airlock heads-on as fast as possible.
  • One more way how it might be possible to reduce the chances of getting scanned is by entering silent running mode (ED wiki page), thus reducing the heat signature of the ship, making it more difficult to be visible. It is unclear, however, how effective that method is when you are so close to a station.
  • One final risk: In rare cases you might also get scanned when you leave a station. This happened to me once (in system LP 751-1). The only way to evade this is to get the hell away from the station and any security vessels.
Is there a negative impact when I am caught smuggling stolen or illegal goods?
  • You will get a fine, which usually is not too high.
  • Also your reputation with the system's controlling faction will drop.
  • See this ED wiki page.
Some systems are listed as having a "black market". What's this and where can it be found?
  • The black market is an alternative to the regular commodities market.
  • Illegal / stolen goods can be sold only on the black market, but the black market may also have other goods.
  • The black market can be accessed in the "Contacts" menu of the starport services.
What are "stolen goods"?
  • Canisters belong to the pilot who purchased them. If another pilot gets into possession of such canisters, they are considered stolen goods for him.
  • Even if a pilot gets killed, any canisters purchased by him still belong to him and are considered stolen goods for anyone else. This is true even if the pilot got himself killed by attacking someone else.
  • If a ship that carries stolen goods is destroyed, the canisters floating in space still count as stolen goods.
  • If a pilot voluntarily jettisons the cargo he owns, then the canisters no longer belong to him and are not considered stolen goods.
  • Stolen goods that are jettisoned are sill stolen goods.
  • Stolen goods are marked as such when a cargo scanner is used.
  • Stolen goods can be sold only at black markets.
  • See this ED wiki page.
How do I get rid of stolen goods that I (accidentally) picked up with my cargo scoop?
You can jettison them, or you can sell them on the black market.
What are "illegal goods"?
  • Every station has a list of goods that are illegal on that station. This list may vary between stations within the same system or jurisdiction.
  • Even regular commodities may be considered illegal.
  • Where illegal goods can be sold depends on the nature of the illegal goods: Regular commodities can be sold at the regular commmodities market, other goods must be sold at the black market.
  • Carrying illegal goods while being cargo scanned by the authorities results in a fine.
  • See this ED wiki page.

Rare Goods

Q&A

If I find a rare good in a starport, do the other starports in the system also sell this item?
No, rare goods are unique to one starport only.
Rare goods may be considered illegal in some starports. Do I have to sell them on the black market or on the regular commodities market?
 ???
How far do I have to travel to maximize the profit a rare good?
Roughly 170 ly.
How many tons of rare goods can I buy at a time?
Every rare good has its own allotment. So while you may be able to buy only 10t at a time for rare good A, it's very well possible that you can buy 20t for another rare good B. In addition, the state of the system you're buying from is also important. If the system is in boom state then the market will have more tons on sale than if the system is not in boom state.
How long do I have to wait until the market has "refilled"?
Not sure whether the refill occurs gradually over time, or whether the refill occurs in one "burst" (i.e. at one moment there's nothing to buy, at the next moment you can buy your full allotment). Also not sure whether you have to sell the allotment currently in the cargo hold before you get another allotment. What I can say from experience is that, once you have bought your allotment you usually can't buy another allotment. However, I have experienced two cases (e.g. with Kamitra Cigars) where I was able to buy another allotment after re-logging several times, although the second time the amount to buy was 1t less than the full allotment. Update: Apparently there is a respawn timer of 10 minutes. Apparently this can be exploited like this: 1) Buy allotment, then leave the station. 2) Wait 10 minutes outside of the station until the respawn timer has expired. 3) Jettison cargo. Note that you will get a fine if you do this within the station's no fire zone. 4) Dock again and buy a new allotment. 5) Undock and rush outside to collect the jettisoned cargo before the cargo canisters expire.

Momus Reach run

Travelling from Diaguandri (Li Yong-Rui space) to Cubeo (Aisling Duvall HQ), after an outfitting shopping stroll. Goals:

  • Buy as many rare goods on the way to sell them at Cubeo
  • Make as much money as possible by trading between rare goods systems

First run

  • 714k profit from rare goods
  • 17k fine from illegal drug Tarach Spice
  • Net profit = 697k
  • Minus expenses for fuel / repair
  • If I remember correctly I made this run in a Type-6 transporter
