In the page history there are older revisions of this page that show how the network was laid out and configured when a Linux machine still was in the household. Also the configurations of older routers are available in the history.
Device-independent information
These days the intranet consists of one single subnet:
192.168.178.0/255
There are no longer a DMZ, wired and wireless subnets.
Device
The current Internet router device is a Fritz!Box 5530 Fiber.
Optic fiber cable
The optic fiber cable used to connect the router to the wall socket has the following designations on a label on the plastic bag in which it was delivered:
- Length: 3 meters
- OS2 9/125µm Single Mode Fiber Patch Cable
- Connector: SC UPC to LC APC Simplex
- SC/UPC IL: <= 0.3 dB RL: >= 50 dB
- LC/APC IL: <= 0.3 dB RL: >= 50 dB

Physically, the two ends of the optic fiber cable have the following appearance:
- One is thin and is colored green.
- One is thicker and is colored blue.

In the household intranet, the router can be accessed via this URL: http://fritz.box/
Speed
General notes
- Nominally, on 04-Sep-2026 the Fritz!Box web UI shows (after logging in) a link speed of 10 GBit/s for both download and upload.
- The household's current SolNet subscription promises 1 GBit/s.

Notes:

- Conclusions
- The 2.4 GHz WiFi connection is much slower than the 5 GHz WiFi connection. The exact reason is not known, but at a guess this could be due to interference from a lot of other wireless networks from other households, because the 2.4 GHz band is probably much more used than the 5 GHz band. To view the saturation of a given WiFi band, log in to the Fritz!Box and navigate to "WLAN > Funkkanal".

- Was ist eine OTO-Dose? (Glasfaser-Steckdose). Article on green.ch explaining what an OTO socket is. OTO is an abbreviation probably meaning "Optical Termination Outlet" or "Optical Telecommunication Outlet". Probably, because on short notice I was not able to find an independent (e.g. Wikipedia) definition for the abbreviation.
Steps from personal experience
- The leaflet accompanying the Fritz!Box shows a green cable to be plugged into the Fritz!Box. In reality, I needed to plug in the blue end of the fibre optic cable into the Fritz!Box. This may be due to the fact that I received the Fritz!Box with a so-called "SFP module" already plugged in.
- The green end of the fibre optic cable goes into plug 2 of the OTO socket. The PDF sent by SolNet indicates which plug you need to use.
- Once the Fritz!Box "Power/Fiber" indicator shows a steady green light (i.e. it is no longer blinking), you can connect any device to the Fritz!Box wireless network. The device should now show a "Captive WLAN" pop up where you can enter the activation code that is in the PDF sent by SolNet.
- In practice, this did not work as expected on several devices. I tried a MacBook first, then an iPhone, and finally a Windows PC. Although all devices showed the popup, the popup either remained empty or showed an error message. Unfortunately I did not record any details, but in effect it was not possible to enter the activation code, nor any other details.
- What finally worked was the following procedure.
- On the Windows PC, connect to the WiFi network of the Fritz!Box and get the "Captive WLAN" pop up with the error.
- Open the tray in the taskbar, then click on the network icon.
- This shows a list of the available WiFi networks, in particular the one WiFi network you are connected to.
- The entry with the WiFi network you are connected to shows a small text "Action needed, no internet", plus a clickable link text "Open browser and connect". Click that link.
- Now a browser window/tab opens with a page where you can finally enter the activation code (and other details). The URL of that page in my case was: https://wwww.swisscom.ch/splashpage/guest/app/AccessId/en/
- Enter the details and submit the form.
- In my case, the website said that I would have to wait about 30 minutes until activation is complete.
- After about 2 minutes, the page refreshed and said "Something went wrong! Try again later."
- At this point, I tried in desperation to make a net search, and - lo and behold! - I got a working internet connection. Apparently the activation had worked before the 30 minutes were up, but the website had failed to tell me.
Internet
Tab "FRITZ!-Dienste"
- Diagnosedaten = Enabled
- This is enabled by default.
- When enabled, this allows the Fritz!Box device to send diagnostic data to the manufacturer "on demand", i.e. when the device encounters a problem.
- I am willing to share such diagnostic data with the manufacturer, so I leave this enabled.
- Diagnose und Wartung = Disabled
- This is enabled by default.
- When enabled, this would allow the manufacturer to connect to my Fritz!Box to download diagnostic information.
- While I'm willing to share diagnostic data with the manufacturer, I don't want them to be able to access my device.
Tab "Freigaben"

- When enabled, the Fritz!Box is reachable from the Internet over port 443.
- For the previous Fritz!Box I had enabled this feature, but never actually used it, so I'm disabling it now.
- To be able to actually log in from the Internet, you need to know the device's current IP address (the Fritz!Box web UI shows this) and you need to have a user defined (under "System > FRITZ!Box-Benutzer") that has the permission to log in from the Internet. There is one such user already pre-created, but it is inactive.
- For the previous Fritz!Box I had the following note - no idea whether this is still accurate: Alternatively you can register with the MyFRITZ! service, which is a DynDNS service provided by AVM. Cf this help page.

Push Service
Setup
The setup requires you to configure an account that is capable of sending emails.
- Go to "System > Push Service".
- When you set up Push Services for the first time, you select "Push Service einrichten". This pops up a Wizard-style sequence of dialogs that guide you through the setup.
- Later on you will see a separate tab "Absender" which contains the settings that you entered via the Wizard.
Sender information
- Email address = mailbox.org sender account (Patrick's account)
- Password = mailbox.org sender account password
- Email user name = mailbox.org sender account
- SMTP server = smtp.mailbox.org
- Port = 465
- This server supports secure connection = Enable
Other settings
- Recipient email address = fritzbox@herzbube.ch
- This is the address that will receive Push Service email by default, if nothing else is configured for a particular Push Service
- Sender name = FRITZ!Box 5530 Fiber
- This is the name that will be shown as the email sender
- Persönlicher Betreff = <secret>
- This is a prefix used in the subject of emails sent by this Fritz!Box, used to distinguish such emails from spam.
- I'm not writing this down here so that it can be used to create forgeries.
Individual Push Service settings
Because there are quite a few Push Services, the UI now lists them under categories: Allgemein, Telefonie, SmartHome. Each service has its own settings page.

Telephony
Answerting machine
Creating an answering machine device:
- Unlike with the previous Fritz!Box, an external USB device is no longer necessary to store answering machine data.
- Go to "Telefonie > Anrufbeantworter"
- Enable the "Anrufbeantworter" switch
- Click the "Einstellungen" button
- Accept call = 30 seconds (up from the default 20 seconds)
- Recording length = 180 seconds (up from the default 60 seconds)
- Send messages via email = true
- Sending emails requires a basic setup of Push Services (see previous sections). The actual details are then configured either here, or under "System > Push Service".
DECT phone interface to the answering machine
- Dial
**600to connect to the answering machine device - From there you can listen to messages (the info LED on the Fritz!Box flashes when messages have newly arrived), or record a personal greeting message
- Note: This information is from the previous Fritz!Box. These days we no longer have a DECT phone in the household, but I'm keeping the information here for historical purposes.
DECT
If you want to use a DECT handset, this can be set up under "Telefonie > DECT".
These days we no longer have a DECT phone in the household, so I keep everything disabled here (it's disabled by default). Older versions of this wiki page have the information should it be needed again in the future.
Home Network
In this section of the UI it is possible to set up all sorts of nifty networking things, such as
- Assign an IP address to the Fritz!Box. Default = 192.168.172.1.
- Configure IPv4
- DHCP. Default range = 192.168.172.20 - 192.168.172.200, with a default lease of 10 days.
- DNS. The default DNS server is the Fritz!Box (which in turn resolves via the internet provider's DNS server).
- Guest network. Default = 192.168.179.1 / 255.255.255.0.
- Configure IPv6.
- Assign static IP addresses to devices, based on their MAC address.
- Defining static routes.
- Assign a "friendly name" to the Fritz!Box which is then used in various places (e.g. for Push Services).
WLAN
Setup of wireless networks
Go to "WLAN > Funknetz".
- Unterschiedliche Namen für WLAN-Funknetze verwenden = Enabled (default is disabled)
- Set up the usual (not disclosed here) names (SSIDs) for the two networks on the 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz band.
Band settings
This would allow setting up the technical details of the WiFi networks in use. I keep the defaults because I don't want to fiddle with this low-level stuff.
On this page you can see how much the WiFi bands were saturated:
- Summarized across the last 7 days, separately shown for each of the 24 hours of the day.
- In detail for each band for the last 10 minutes.
Security
The most important setting on this page is the WiFi access password.
Other interesting settings are the WPA mode, or whether PMF support is enabled (default = disabled).
