The topic of this page are the many external tools that exist that support playing Elite Dangerous.
List of tools
Web tools
- Inara: A generalist website to obtain information about all sorts of things that are going on in the ED universe.
- Elite Dangerous Star Map (EDSM)
- Spansh
- ED Tools Collection: Notably the Miner's Tool that lets you find hotspots for a given metal for laser mining.
- Designing + sharing ship builds
- HGE Finder
- Elite: Dangerous Community Developers (EDCD)
Local tools
- EDDiscovery: Originally this tool was geared towards exploration, but nowadays I use it as a generalist tool that keeps a record of all of my activities in the game.
- Elite Observatory: Scans the game journal for interesting astronomical bodies and other things that you discover. The tools supports plugins. I'm using a number of CMDR MattG's Observatory Plugins:
- BioInsights: Shows the most likely plants that grow on a planet with bio signals. Also displays an overlay when taking samples that indicates how far you have traveled from the previous samples you took.
- Evaluator: Estimate body values for efficient scanning.
- AstroAnalytica: Among other things, notifies you when it detects Notable Stellar Phenomenona.
- BoxelStats
- Elite Dangerous Journal Processor: This tool has many functions, but I currently use it only because it's the only tool that I know of that can provide an overlay in the FSS Scanner screen, indicating which planet types are where on the FSS Scanner spectrum.
- Elite Dangerous Odyssey Materials Helper: Super useful to keep track of what you need for both on-foot and ship engineering. You create wishlists with desired engineering modifications, and the tool shows you what materials you need.
- SrvSurvey: Extremely useful tool for managing colonisation projects. SrvSurvey works closely together with the Raven Colonial website to manage your construction projects. The top functionality, which so far I have not seen being offered by any other tool, is the ability to search for nearby markets that offer the materials needed for construction. This search functionality is part of the website; it is very useful because the UI allows you to easily spot markets that have several of the materials that you need, thus minimizing the amount of stations that you need to dock at. SrvSurvey has lots of other functionalities besides colonisation, but at the time of writing I have disabled almost all of it.
- Elite Dangerous Market Connector
EDDiscovery
I'm using the Portable version. How to update:
- Unzip.
- Move to install location.
- Take over the data folder into the newly extracted folder.
Elite Observatory
I'm using the Portable version. How to update:
- Unzip.
- Move to install location.
- Take over:
- The .config file.
- The non-core plugins, and those plugins' "*-Data" folders.
Elite Dangerous Journal Processor
Requires .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime (x64).
Overview of functions:
- Creates routes of waypoints. Assists you following them by automatically putting your next waypoint into the clipboard once you reach the current waypoint, ready for pasting into the Galaxy Map.
- It can also take a list of waypoints and reorder them into the most efficient route.
- EDJP can assist you in deep space boxel surveys by automatically putting your next target system into the clipboard, and skipping any systems you've already visited.
- It can also show where a boxel is in relation to the rest of the sector.
- Has an overlay that can show you brief body details without needing to view the System Map. It can estimate body value. It can tell you the age of a system as you jump in.
Elite Dangerous Odyssey Materials Helper
Overview of functions:
- Useful to create a wishlist. The tool displays all materials that are needed for things on that wishlist, and shows what you already have.
- Supports not just on-foot engineering, but also ship engineering and tech broker blueprints.
- Shows location of nearest tech broker.
- Provides tips how to obtain materials.
SrvSurvey
In theory the software has an installer, but at the time of writing this didn't work properly. All it would help with is installing a prerequisite (some version of .NET, if I remember correctly).
To update, just delete the old folder, then copy the unzipped archived to the appropriate location and run SrvSurvey.exe from there. Data is kept somewhere in your user home directory, so there's no need to take care of retaining it.
ED Market Connector
How to update:
- Launch => Will check for updates.
- When update is detected prompts for download + install.
- Install to the default location => Setup will detect that an old version is already installed and uninstall it first.
