EDEngineering
This page contains information about engineering in the game Elite: Dangerous.
More information can be obtained from the ED wiki [1] or from various ED forum posts [2].
Types of engineers
There are two types of engineers:
- Ship engineers: These provide modifications to ship weapons and modules.
- Pilot equipment engineers: These provide modifications to suits and hand-held weapons.
The gameplay is substantially simpler for pilot equipment engineers than for ship engineers. Notably:
- Pilot equipment engineers are easier to access because they do not require you to fulfill an initial contract.
- Pilot equipment engineers do not have multiple grades of access, nor do pilot equipment modifications have multiple grades.
- There are no experimental effects for pilot equipment modifications.
Summary of how engineering works
Ship engineers
General notes
- Ship modules (not the ships themselves) can be changed with applying exactly one modification and one experimental effect.
- Several modifications (also known as "blueprints") and experimental effects are available for a given ship module type. For instance, Frame Shift Drives can be modified by applying either the "Faster boot sequence" or "Increased range" or "Shielded" blueprint.
- A modification or an experimental effect usually changes multiple attributes of the affected ship module at the same time. Typically there is one (or more) positive change(s) - the desired effect - but also one (or more) negative change(s) - the undesired side effects. For instance, the "Increased FSD range" modification improves the "Optimised Mass" attribute of the affected FSD module, but has the negative side effects of increasing the "Mass" and the "Power Draw" attributes as well as decreasing the "Integrity" attribute.
- Once a modification is in place on a given module, the modification's effects can be further enhanced by improving its grade. A modification starts at grade 1 and can be improved until grade 5. Overall a higher grade improves the positive effects of the modification. In order to improve the grade of a modification, you also need to improve the grade of access you have to the engineer that is providing the modification.
- Experimental effects cannot be applied to unmodified ship modules. Before an experimental effect can be applied to a ship module, a modification must have been applied to the module. It is sufficient to apply a single grade 1 modification.
- Experimental effects do not have grades. Once they are applied to a ship module they are simply there.
- Applying a different modification to a ship module removes an already existing modification and experimental effect and replaces them with the new modification.
Pre-engineered ship modules
- A variety of pre-engineered ship modules exist that have two modifications at the same time - something that cannot be achieved with normal gameplay.
- Some of the pre-engineered ship modules can be bought at Tech Brokers in exchange of a number of materials. Other pre-engineered ship modules were given out as rewards for certain time-limited activities in the game, such as Community Goals. These can no longer be obtained.
- You cannot apply another modification to a pre-engineered ship module - or rather: you can, but the module will then lose its special properties because, as mentioned in the general notes, applying a different modification to a ship module removes all already existing modifications and experimental effects.
- Some pre-engineered ship modules do allow to apply a further experimental effect.
- For a list of existing pre-engineered ship modules, see the ED wiki [3]
Remote workshops
- Every engineer allows to pin one modification.
- Pinned modifications can be crafted at any station equipped with a Remote Workshop, but a modification crafted remotely will not contribute to reputation with its Engineer.
- Experimental effects cannot be pinned and cannot be applied from a Remote Workshop.
Pilot equipment engineers
General notes
- Certain Pilot equipment can be changed with applying exactly one modification. At the time of writing the equipment types that can be modified are suits and handheld weapons.
- Once a modification is applied it cannot be removed or changed.
- Many modifications are available for a given equipment type. For instance, suits can be modified by applying the "Extra Backpack Capacity" or "Improved Battery Capacity" or "Improved Jump Assist" modification, and many more.
- A modification usually changes one attribute of the affected piece of equipment, although some change multiple attributes. For instance, the "Damage Resistance" modification improves all resistance types of a suit.
- Currently only positive attribute changes are known, i.e. unlike with ship module modifications there are no modifications known that have negative side effects.
- Pilot equipment cannot be modified via Remote workshops.
Gaining access to engineers
The protocol for gaining access to an engineer is as follows:
- Learn of an engineer's existence
- Initially every player knows about a few engineers - this is public knowledge. You learn about the existence of other engineers by working with the engineers you already know.
- Ship engineers: Your access to a ship engineer is measured in "grades". There are grades 1-5. If an engineer has knowledge of another ship engineer, they will reveal that knowledge to you when you have gained grade 3 access and are about 1/3 of the way towards grade 4 access (sometimes grade 3 access may also be sufficient). See the section Discovery tree further down on this page for a schematic of how your knowledge of the existence of all the engineers progresses. When you learn of an engineer's existence the engineer's status is "locked".
- Pilot equipment engineers: If an engineer has knowledge of another pilot equipment engineer, they will reveal that knowledge to you when you meet their referral requirement. This usually consists of turning in some kind of material or good.
- Receive an invitation
- Sometimes when you learn about an engineer's existence you will immediately receive an invitation from that engineer to pay him or her a visit at his or her place of residence. Sometimes, however, the mere knowledge of an engineer's existence is not enough and you first have to meet a precondition of some sort (e.g. gain reputation with a faction) before you will receive the invitation. Once you have met the precondition you receive the invitation either as a direct message, or in the form of a mission that you have to accept from a station's mission board. The Engineers screen (available from the status panel by selecting the "View engineers" button) tells you about which precondition(s) you have to meet, and where you can obtain the invitation mission. Only an invitation will reveal an engineer's place or residence. When you receive an invitation the engineer's status changes from "locked" to "invited".
- Fulfill initial contract (ONLY SHIP ENGINEERS)
- Once a ship engineer has invited you, you still have to fulfill an initial contract before you can start to work with the engineer. The requirements of the initial contract wildly vary from ship engineer to ship engineer and are typically tied to the engineer's personal background story. You must fullfill the contract at the engineer's place of residence, but you can usually visit the engineer several times to fulfill parts of the contract. Example: If you have to donate cash or goods you can do so by donating several times and the donations will add up until you have met all the requirements. When you fulfill the initial contract you gain grade 1 access to the engineer and can start to make modifications to your ship's modules using the blueprints provided by the engineer.
- Increase grade of access (ONLY SHIP ENGINEERS)
- Every time you spend resources for rolling on a modification you will slightly increase the grade of access you have to the ship engineer. Grades of access progress from 1 to 5. With grade 1 access a blueprint's modifications are the least powerful, but the resources you have to spend on a roll are also relatively cheap and easy to come by. Higher grades of access allow you to perform more powerful modifications with the same blueprint, although the blueprint's general effects remain the same. At the same time you also have to spend more expensive resources on each roll. "More expensive" does not necessarily mean an increase in quantity (e.g. 2 instead of 1 Sulphur), but you usually have to spend a different kind of resource that is more difficult to obtain (e.g. 1 Chemical Manipulator instead of 1 Chemical Processor).
Discovery tree
The following nested lists show which engineers you have to unlock in order to gain access to other engineers. Engineers marked with (*) are those that I am particularly interested in because they provide blueprints that are useful for exploration.
Note that ship engineers and pilot equipment engineers do not know each other, the two trees are wholly independent.
Ship engineers
A ship engineer will reveal the next engineer(s) he or she knows to you when you have gained grade 3 access and are about 1/3 of the way towards grade 4 access (sometimes grade 3 access may also be sufficient).

Engineers overview
The following tables list all engineers, their homesystems, which blueprints they provide and which modules are affected by the blueprints. Note that some blueprints are provided by more than one engineer.
Ship engineers
Engineer (*) = relevant for exploration |
Home base | Allegiance | Revealed by | Invitation | Initial contract | Increase grade access | Module | Blueprint / Maximum grade | Remarks |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Elvira Martuuk (*) | Khun Khun 5 Long Sight Base |
Independent | - (common knowledge) | Travel more than 300 ly from starting system | Provide 3 units of Soontill Relics (rare good) | Craft modules or Sell exploration data at home base |
Thrusters | Dirty Drive Tuning (2) Drive Strengthening (2) Clean Drive Tuning (2) |
Soontill Relics can only be bought at Cheranovsky City in the Ngurii system. As with all rare goods, you can only buy a certain maximum quantity at a time, but since this engineer requires only 3 units you should be able to obtain the required units in a single visit. In my case I was able to buy 16t at a time. |

Power Plants | Armoured Power Plant (4) Overcharged Power Plant (4) Low Emissions Power Plant (3) | ||||||||
Professor Palin | Arque Arque 4 e Abel Laboratory |
Independent | Marco Qwent | Travel more than 5000 ly from starting system | Provide 25 units of Unknown Fragments | Craft modules or Sell exploration data at home base |
Thrusters | Dirty Drive Tuning (5) Drive Strengthening (5) Clean Drive Tuning (5) |
Unknown Fragments can be obtained by shooting Unknown Artifacts. Where exactly one can find Unknown Artifacts seems to be a somewhat moving target. For instance, at the time of writing the Alien Crash Site located in the HIP 17862 system, on planet 6 C A at coordinates 30.3398, -98.587, seems to have disappeared. Instead I was successful hunting USS in the HIP 14479 system: Only USS with the type "Anomaly Detected (Threat 4)" are interesting, those contain an Unknown Artefact which on destruction will disintegrate into 1-2 Unknown Fragments. As usual with materials, each Unknown Fragment that you collect will produce 3 materials in your inventory. So to fullfil the engineer's contract you will have to collect 8 fragments. |
FSD | Faster FSD Boot Sequence (3) Increased FSD Range (3) Shielded FSD (3) | ||||||||
Lori Jameson | Marco Qwent | Combat rank Dangerous or higher | |||||||
Zacariah Nemo | Yoru Yoru 4 Nemo Cyber Party Base |
Independent | Elvira Martuuk | Friendly or higher reputation with minor faction Party of Yoru. Obtain an invitation mission from one of the stations in the Yoru system. | Provide 25 units of Xihe Biomorphic Companions (rare good) | Craft modules or Sell commodities at home base |

Xihe Biomorphic Companions can only be bought at Zhen Dock in the Xihe system. As with all rare goods, you can only buy a certain maximum quantity at a time, but since this engineer requires only 25 units you should be able to obtain the required units in a single visit. In my case I was able to buy 40t at a time. |

Manifest Scanners | Misc Leightweight (3) Misc Reinforced (3) Misc Shielded (3) Long Range Scanner (3) Wide Angle Scanner (3) Fast Scanner (3) |
The initial description of the engineer that is displayed before the invitation inidicates that only combat bond vouchers count that are earned while fighting on the side of a faction that is affiliated with the Federation superpower ("50 combat bonds for the Feds"). In any way, when you hand in vouchers be sure to wait some time (can be several minutes) for the transaction to register and for the invitation requirement counters to go up. A note regarding gaining rank with the engineer: To fulfill the initial contract you can donate any kind of combat bond vouchers, but when you want to gain rank with the engineer later on you can sell only local combat bond vouchers at the engineer's home base! |

Colonel Bris Dekker | Sol Iapetus Dekker's Yard |
Federation | Juri Ishmaak | Friendly or higher reputation with superpower Federation | Provide 1'000'000 credits worth of combat bond vouchers | ? | ? | ? | In order to be able to visit Sol at all you need to obtain a system permit, and you get that permit only by gaining Petty Officer or higher naval rank with superpower Federation. While you still haven't fulfilled the initial contract, the engineer description says: "Combat reputation means nothing. Show me proof. You want access to my expertise, I want to see combat bonds for the Federation." As with Juri Ishmaak, it is not clear whether this means that the vouchers must be earned while fighting on the side of a faction that is affiliated with the Federation superpower. |
The Sarge | Beta-3 Tucani Beta-3 Tucani 2 B A The Beach |
Federation | Juri Ishmaak | Midshipman or higher naval rank with superpower Federation | Provide 50 units of Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis | ? | Cannons | Efficient Weapon (5) High Capacity Magazine (5) Light Weight Mount (5) Long Range Weapon (5) Overcharged Weapon (5) Rapid Fire Modification (5) Short Range Blaster (5) Sturdy Mount (5) |
Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis is a type of data that can be obtained by scanning ships. The only ship types that I clearly remember of yielding this data type are the Orca, Cobra MK III, Type-7 Transporter, Python, Vulture and Type-9 Heavy. Other ship types may yield this data type as well. |

Fuel Scoops | ? | The in-game description of the engineer's invitation precondition suggests that you need to be friendly (or higher) with the Alliance. However, when I started working on my Alliance reputation, I suddenly received the invitation when I was still at cordial reputation, to be exact: when I sold some commodities while I was at the 35% mark towards friendly. Bromellite cannot be bought, it must be mined from icy rings. Select a system with pristine reserves and make sure to take prospector limpets to maximize the yield. I loaded up my Cutter with 475 limpets, then on premise I freely wasted limpets to find asteroids with a high concentration of Bromellite, in order to get done as quickly as possible. Of course you can also mine asteroids with a low concentration of Bromellite (less than 10%), but then it will take a lot of time to refine 50 tonnes. If you focus on asteroids with a concentration of, let's say, at least 15% you will get at least 2-3 Bromellite for every asteroid. |

In order to be able to visit Achenar at all you need to obtain a system permit, and you get that permit only by becoming Squire or higher naval rank with superpower Empire. Decoded Emission Data can be obtained as a mission reward, or from scanning combat-type ships. You don't need to blow those ships up, just scan them. It doesn't matter where you scan the ship, i.e. you can scan ships in supercruise, at a nav beacon, in a hazardous RES, outside a station, etc.. Decoded Emission Data is quite rare (grade 4 data type), so personally I recommend to do the scanning as an occupation on the side to minimize the RNG frustration. For instance, I once spent several hours scanning combat ships in a combat zone, without getting even a single Decoded Emission Data. After that I decided to just do some normal trading and community goal stuff and scan ships whenever I see them. The data collection process was much less frustrating after that. I got Decoded Emission Data from the following ship types: Viper MK III, Asp Explorer, Imperial Clipper, Imperial Courier, Federal Dropship, Python and Vulture. Note that sometimes you get several data packages from a single scan, so you should always keep sufficient space in your data storage to make sure that the coveted Decoded Emission Data will not be lost due to full storage. I once received 4 data packages from a single scan, which in total yielded 12 data items, so after that I always kept 12 free slots in my data storage. |

Ship engineering notes
The following subsections contain information that are relevant only for ship engineering.
General information about blueprints
- If several engineers have the same blueprint, the material costs on the same blueprint level are the same regardless of engineer.
- The effects of a blueprint on a module can vary with the class of the module. Example: The "Engine Focused Power Distributor" blueprint affects a power distributor's "Engines capacity" in the range of 4-20% for a class 3C power distributor, and in the range of 5-20% for a class 8C power distributor. When you enter an engineer's workshop you can either view a blueprint's effect on a module with the class of your choice, or you can modify a module you have with you. In the latter case the UI displays the effects of the selected blueprint on the actual module you have with you - if that module has already been modified before, the effects shown are relative to the previous modification.
- Experimental Effects can only be applied at an Engineer's workshop, not remotely.
- An Experimental Effect can be applied to a module as soon as it has at least one modification. What might be confusing: If you select a modification grade where you have not yet generated the first modification, the "Experimental Effect" button is disabled. You must select a lower modification grade, then the button becomes enabled.
Improving access to an engineer
- You gain access to an engineer's higher grade modifications by "training": Whenever you apply a modification your access level increases.
- Higher grade modifications bring a higher access level increase. Grade 1 modifications bring only a tiny progress when you are on the road to grade 5, whereas grade 3 and 4 modifications bring substantial progress.
- After you have reached grade 4 access, modding a single module up to grade 5 should be sufficient to reach grade 5 access.
- The percentage how much you have already progressed to the next access level is visible as a bar in the top-left corner of the screen when you have selected a module type.
- As of the April Update (2019) there is a bug that when you reach grade 5 access this progress bar shows the progress from grade 5 to grade 5, and the access level still shows "Grade 4 access".
- After closing the screen and calling it up again, the access level now correctly says "Grade 5 access" and the progress bar is replaced with the message "Maximum grade reached".
- Possibly behind the scenes there is a progress counter still going up?
- You can start applying a higher grade modification before you have fully gained access to the engineer's lower grade. The percentage is visible as a small bar below the button with the grade symbols.
Number of transactions needed to apply a modification
Originally there was a certain randomness in how many transactions (aka "rolls") with a ship engineer were needed to apply a modification. As of the "Type-8 Update" (game version 18.08) the randomness was removed so that you now know in advance how many transactions (aka "rolls") are needed. This allows to plan in advance how many materials need to be collected to achieve a given modification.
Actually what is measured is the percentage per transaction towards the goal of applying a modification. But of course this can be turned into the number of transactions with a simple calculation. Example: If a transaction effects 25% towards the goal of applying a modification, then you need 4 transactions to reach 100%.
The higher the access grade to an engineer is, the less transactions are needed.

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | |
1 | 5 (20%) | 4 (25%) | 3 (34%) | 2 (50%) | 1 (100%) |
2 | - | 5 (20%) | 4 (25%) | 3 (34%) | 2 (50%) |
3 | - | - | 5 (20%) | 4 (25%) | 3 (34%) |

Blueprints overview
The following tables list blueprints, which engineers provide them, what modules they affect and what the effects are. The effect values come from applying the blueprint to an unmodified class 1 module - applying the blueprint to a module of a higher class should have the same general effects (e.g. "- Mass") but the effect values may differ.

Pilot equipment engineers
The column "Useful for exploration" marks those 4 modifications that are clearly useful for exploration (which is my favourite activity in the game).
- AFAIK, the only on-foot exploration activity there currently is, besides claiming the "first footfall" tag, is to gather Exobiology data.
- For that the Genetic Sampler tool is needed, which consumes battery power. To reduce that consumption, the "Reduced Tool Battery Consumption" modification is useful.
- For prolongued on-foot excursions, it is also in general useful to make the battery last as long as possible. This is achieved with the "Improved Battery Capacity" modification.
- To help with reaching difficult locations or frolicking around on planetary surfaces, the "Improved Jump Assist" looks useful.
- Finally, the "Extra Backpack Capacity" modification allows you to collect as many pieces of Exobiology data as possible without having to return to the ship.
Some of the modifications I marked with "?" because at the time of writing I'm not sure whether these are needed for exploration at all, or whether they should have a higher priority than the ones I listed above. Notably "Faster Shield Regen" and "Increased Air Reserves" seem to be modifications more applicable to emergencies, but since the maximum number of modifications that can be applied to a suit is 4, at the moment I'm depriorizing those modifications.

Increase magnification when aiming | Some weapons have no scope by default, while others already have a scope. This modification can be applied to both weapon types. When applied to a weapon without a scope by default, this adds a scope which then increases the magnification when aiming down sights. When applied to a weapon with a scope, this simply increases the existing scope's magnification. | |
